Your First DIY Kitchen Cabinet Install Doesn't Have To Be A Disaster!
By Simon Harris

Installing your own kitchen CabinetsSo, your kitchen cabinets don't look so hot...but your bank account looks pretty thin. You might be persuaded to attempt this project yourself, but it's just too darn hard to do this, unless you are a professional...Well, my friend, I'm here to tell you: You CAN do this work yourself, if you know what you are doing before you start. Let me give you a hand and give you a few pointers, OK?

Things To Think About First

First of all, before you actually begin your DIY kitchen cabinet install, ask yourself this question: Who will help me? You are going to need a partner - ever try to lift a kitchen cabinet by your self? So, try to find a spouse, buddy, family member to help you throughout this project.

Here's another thing: Before beginning work on your DIY kitchen cabinet install, you will need to vacate your kitchen cabinets of EVERYTHING that is in them, or on them. And if you want to protect that fine kitchen floor that you installed 2 years ago, then you better cover it up before work on your DIY kitchen cabinet install begins. If you don't, you will end up with a floor that is full of scratches, paint stains, dirt, sawdust and the like.

Lastly, make sure that you can keep everyone out of the area during the weekend when you will be doing your DIY kitchen cabinet install. If the holidays are coming up, or the in-laws are coming over, now is NOT the time to do this type of work.

Choosing The Right Materials

Since all of this DIY kitchen cabinet install stuff is probably pretty new to you, let me give you the short tour: You can choose cabinet materials made from wood or metal. That's about it. And it should go without saying that you need to stay away from the bargain basement crapola merchandise when doing your DIY kitchen cabinet install - it should go without saying, yet again and again, homeowners get ripped off by their local snake-oil cabinet salesman.

Remember: your kitchen cabinets will be subjected to constant use, over many years. The cheap stuff will NOT last - no matter what any salesperson tells you. If you do not select the very best materials for your DIY kitchen cabinet install, you are going to pay the price later, believe me.

Custom-Made? Ready-To-Install?

Another area of choice: In doing your DIY kitchen cabinet install you can either choose to have your cabinets custom-made (and we're talking big bucks here) or you can get the ready-to-install kind. If you have the moolah and want to throw it around on your home fix-ups, fine- go ahead. Of course, if you have an odd-shaped kitchen you may have no choice but to have at least some of your cabinets custom-made, but in general I would recommend that you save money where you can, and get the ready-to-install units when you do your DIY kitchen cabinet install. They are available in a wide variety of sizes, colors and styles - and I'm sure that you'll find something there that will suit you.

What more can I say? Just this: Investigate before you buy. Take your time. Especially don't let some antsy sales clerk, anxious to get his/her commission, pressure you into making your decisions prematurely. OF COURSE they don't want you to investigate when you are doing your DIY kitchen cabinet instal - the less you know, the better for them - but not for you.

Here's hoping that your first DIY kitchen cabinet install will be a complete and total success!
